I interviewed Shauna Mandeloff, she is a Sterile Processing Coordinator and Manager of the instrument room staff at Methodist Hospital. At first it was hard to schedule an interview with Shauna because they were implementing new software and she was also at meetings almost everyday when improving workflow in her department. I meet Shauna few years ago when we both did Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIW), she seemed like a nice person and very easy to work with that is why I chose her to be my interviewee. I called her up to schedule a meeting with her and she seemed very excited to help me out with this project. We schedule our interview in her office, which was our first interview because we had to reschedule due to her meetings schedule.

At our first meeting I got to meet some of her staff members and to talk to them a little bit about her management skills. It seemed to me that everyone who I’ve talked to about Shauna was happy with her management skills and how she handles issues that come up. They said that she is fair to everyone, she is very empathetic, tends to help her staff if some personal stuff come up, that she is good listener, and she works well with diverse staff members.

My interview with Shauna started later than we originally have planed. When I walked into her office she seemed upset and emotional. She explained to me that she is having a problem with one her staff members who was harassing one of the temporary employees that was working for her. She said that they had fire that employee because of the harassment issues. She seemed very emotional about firing her employee but she said “I have to let him go, I can’t have him harass other employees,” she said that it was ongoing conflict between these two people and it had to be stopped because other employees complained about it too.
