Critical Thinking

Thinking is something that people do daily. However, people who think critically “as a habit of life is evident in the lives of those who have mastered the process” (University of Phoenix, Week one supplement, n.d., para. 4). According to The Critical Thinking Community (n.d.), “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action” (para. 3). Possessing critical thinking habits are vital in the work industry, to make effective decisions. Decision-making is a process and if followed can be beneficial.

Different Type of Thinkers

Critical thinking has two incompatible ends: self-centeredness and fair-mindedness. Once a person has learned the basics of critical thinking, then those skills can be used either in a selfish or fair-minded way. Critical thinking also has weak-sense and strong-sense critical thinkers. Weak thinkers are missing higher-level skills of critical thinking. Weak thinkers do not to consider the viewpoints that oppose their own, they lack fair-mindedness. According to Critical Thinking: Tools for Taking Charge of Your Learning and Your Life (2006), “strong-sense critical thinkers are not easily tricked by slick arguments,” (p. 3). Strong thinkers have a remarkable characteristic and are consistent when is comes to the pursuit of fair and just. These thinkers also strive to be ethical and use thinking in an ethical, reasonable manner. Fair-minded and strong-sense thinkers avoid using their skills to gain advantages unlike self-centered and weak sense thinkers.
