3. Prince Henry “The Navigator” – Portuguese. NOT a sailor, but he gathered mapmakers, mathematicians, + astronomers to study navigation. Sponsored voyages that discovered the Azores, Madeira Islands, + Cape Verde Islands.

4. Line of Demarcation – an imaginary line drawn by the pope that ran down the middle of the Atlantic from the middle of the North + South Pole. Spain took west. Portugal took east.

5. Treaty of Tordesillas – an agreement between Spain and Portugal to move the Line of Demarcation farther west. All unexplored land is also claimed by Spain + Portugal.

6. Juan Ponce de Leon – sailed for Spain. Founded + named Florida. He was on a journey to find the Fountain of Youth.

7. Ferdinand Magellan – sailed for Spain. Completed 1st circumnavigation, or circling around the globe. Found the Strait of Magellan, which is located on the southern tip of South America. Died in Philippines. His voyage proved that the Earth was round, Columbus’ lands were NOT in Asia, + world is larger than it appears.

8. Christopher Columbus – sailed for Spain. Tried to find alternate route from Spain to India, but actually found new lands, like the Bahamas. Also explored the Caribbean Islands + South America, but died believing he was in India.

9. Henry Hudson – sailed for England + Netherlands. Navigator who claimed land for Dutch along the Atlantic Coast of North America.

10. Bartholomeu Dias – Portuguese. Founded Cape of Good Hope (Cape of Storms) + proved that ships could reach east by sailing around Africa.

11. Vasco da Gama – Portuguese. Sailed from Portugal to India. In India, he found Hindus + Muslims trading fine silk, porcelain, and spices that made Portuguese goods look bad.
