Yea and Nay for Alabama’s Immigration Law

I agree something must be done about illegal immigration into the United States. The legislature of Alabama while doing something has gone about it in a manner inconsistent with good judgment. Due to lack of diligence on the part of our federal government, states are being forced to come up with their own plans. Illegal immigration should not be an issue states are concerned with if the feds were doing their job. They are the ones tasked to defend our nation’s borders. Several states so far have been forced to enact legislation to preserve their own interest.

Being an Alabama citizen for most of my life, it peeves me to no end to have to address an ATM machines question about which language I would prefer or the new Hispanic aisle added to my favorite supermarket. With that being said, the entire issue has gone on for so long that there is no easy solution, as Alabama has recently figured out. Not only have portions of the Alabama Immigration Law been struck down by the courts but, recent detentions of affluent business men have garnered the state unwanted publicity. Maybe this is just part of growing pangs and should be dismissed, just as I dismiss field sobriety checkpoints three blocks from my house on most weekend nights during the summer. An evil that we must contended with for “the betterment of society” so to speak (Gates).

Just as the mistakes in Alabama’s law have come to light, Ann Coulter’s philosophy of deporting them all is equally bad. The out flow of immigrants from the state of Alabama has shown that many parts of the economy will be affected negatively. Several, agricultural and poultry production operations have already felt the crunch. Ultimately, we all lose over the situation due to higher prices on needed commodities.
