Value is a term that has been defined as an enduring prescriptive or prospective belief that a specific end state of existence or a specific mode of conduct is preferred to an opposite end state or mode of conduct for living one’s life (Noris & Swift, 2001). In everyday life, values reflect the most basic characteristics of adaptation used to guide individuals in deciding how to enter situations, which situations to enter, and how to cope once in those situations (Noris & Swift, 2001).

According to the Williams Institute of Ethics Awareness Inventory Survey my results were closer to (O) Obligation and least close to (E) Equity (EAI, 2006). This means I base my ethical perspectives on an individual’s obligation to do what they ought to do and not what they want to do. Instead of focusing on an individual’s actions or the results or their results I focus on the intent or idea behind the results (EAI, 2006).

According to my EAI results I look for ethical principles to be followed. The principles must be appropriate under any circumstances, respectful of human dignity, and committed to promoting individual freedom (EAI, 2006)

My ethical style supposedly means I can’t support social traditions and policies aimed at “the best interests of society as a whole” (EAI, 2006). I tend to advocate for policies intended to ensure equal respect and opportunities for all. I want everyone and everything to be in agreement with the established standards of what is right and what is wrong.

My loyalty to obligation can also be detrimental to my own well being and success. The most cost benefitting analysis may not be appropriate for addressing issues with ethical considerations, even though this is the preferred method used in the work place. The fact that I believe we all have a moral obligation to do what is right may leave little to no room for compromise when ethics are being violated.
