1. Executive summary: Starbucks is an American global coffee company nowadays. It was founded in 1971 in Seattle in Washington. Nowadays Starbucks is the biggest coffeehouse worldwide. In 61 countries: Canada, USA, UK, China, and Japan… Their mission statement is: “to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time”.

Starbucks was listed as one of the best company to work for in 2013. The employee’s satisfaction rate is 82% while the turnover is 120% lower than the average. Every successful company has their own principle how to motivate their employees, so do Starbucks. They don’t see employees only as employees but also as equal partners for business.

2.Main body: Starbucks apply extrinsic and intrinsic motivation for their employees. One of their extrinsic rewards is fringe benefit. They are trying so an employee would stay longer and also would meet her or his social needs. The benefits package is offered to both full-time and part-time workers. Basic employee’s insurance covers: dental, vision and short-term disability insurance. Beside that the benefit package gives them also paid holidays and a stock option plan. Therefore Starbucks workers feel tied to their job, because it fulfills both their financial and personal needs. The other extrinsic reward is pay for performance. Starbucks gives awards for workers, who are doing well. The basic pay for an average employee is about $8, after six months if they are doing well and receive a “favorable performance” their wage increases to about $9.
