Country Analysis: India

The world is flat. A statement that is illogical on its surface, if you are discussing geography. However, with the advent of a global marketplace and the dawn of MNE’s pursuing the interests of stakeholders worldwide, from a business perspective, the world is flat and rife with opportunity. In the brief but event filled history of the 21st century to date, if one had to choose a concept that is a summation of the first 13% of this century, it is globalization. I have been commissioned to provide the board with analysis for expansion into India with recommendations for our strategy. This is a report of my findings.

In terms of a political framework, India is a union of states that is a sovereign, secular, Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of government. The country is governed by a Constitution with executive powers. The President is the executive office as stated by the Constitution; however, true executive power is wielded by the Prime Minister who is the head of the Council of Ministers. Per the Constitution, the President should act upon the advice of the Prime Minister under the advisement of the Council of Ministers.

On the state level, the Governor is the executive office but true powers reside in a Council of Ministers with the Chief Minister presiding over the Council and advising the Governors, who act as a representative of the President. Most offices are elected positions except for the Minister cabinet positions, are voted upon by citizens and last for 5 year terms. Legislation is generally ratified by both the State Legislature and Parliament except for states of emergency where the President has legislative power when the country is deemed under duress. Officials run for elected office under a national party system, the 4 main being Congress,
