Job satisfaction can mean many different things to different people. Some people find that flexibility to balance life and work issues most valuable others believe it is the relationship held with co-workers. Having a job that satisfies us is vital to turn that job into a career. However, no job is perfect because of this we often trade off job attributes. (Robbins & Judge, 2013). The work itself may not be rewarding but the benefit package is outstanding.

In today’s economy job security is more important than ever. According to Christopher Rugaber of the Associated Press, “Only 56 percent of Americans that were laid off from January 2009 through December 2011 had found jobs by the start of this year (2012), the Labor Department said Friday. More than half of them took jobs with lower pay. One-third took pay cuts of 20 percent or more.” (Rugaber, 2012, para. 2). In a survey conducted in 2011 job security was listed as the number one important aspect of employee satisfaction out of a possible nineteen choices. (Society for Human Resource Management, 2011). Though the economy is steadily improving American’s are still unsure of their futures.

It has been said that money makes the world go around. While that may not necessarily be true it certainly is not possible to survive in the United States without a source of incoming money. That is why I believe that compensation/pay is the second most important factor for job satisfaction. Though benefits such as healthcare and dental are important being a young American having the ability to live comfortably is very important to me. I believe this stems from a poor upbringing.
