Toyota’s history

Sakichi Toyoda was the inventor that created the Toyoda Automatic Loom Company which was licensed to a British concern for 1 million yen. This money was then used to help found Toyota Motor Company, and was supported by the Japanese government partly because of the military applications (Schreier, 2011). Toyota started with two cylinder engines but then copied the Chevrolet 65-horsepower straight-six, and was until 1934 when it produced its first engine (Schreier, 2011). After World War II, Toyota made the Totopet and was the first popular car. They were the ones that created the Land Cruiser which was a Jeep style, and in 1955 the produced its first luxury car, the Crown, which was a four cylinder 1.5 liter engine (Schreier, 2011). In 1959 Toyota open a plant outside of Japan, and in 1964 there was the first Americanized Toyota which was the Tiara also known as the Toyota Corona PT20 (Schreier, 2011). Toyota was later able to create the Lexus which made competition to Mercedes on its costs. Later on Toyota was able to create a new line of cars like the Corollas, Camrys, and then the Scion. Toyota keeps on battleting to obtain the number one spot with GM and Ford, and have been able to double sales compared to Hondas (Schreier, 2011). The thing that makes Toyota stand out is that they stick with name of cars that are successful compared to other companies that throw away names frequently. The names such as the Land Cruiser started in 1950; the Corolla in 1966; the Celica in 1970; the Camry in 1983; the 4Runner in 1984 are the vehicles that we have as of today (Schreier, 2011).
