Question 1
If you could stop time and live forever in good health, what age would you pick? Answers to this question were reported in a USA Today Snapshot. The average ideal age for each age group is listed in the following table; the average ideal age for all adults was found to be 41. Interestingly, those younger than 30 years want to be older, whereas those older than 30 years want to be younger.

Age is used as a variable twice in this application.
a. The age of the person being interviewed is not the random variable in this situation. Explain why and describe how “age” is used with regard to age group.
- The age of the person being interviewed is not a random variable due to the fact that it is not subjected to variations due to chance. It is merely the age of the interviewee taking the survey that is placed into the various age groups on the chart. The significance is that it will assist in determining the relation between the age group of the respondents and their viewpoint on the ideal age at which he/she would like to live forever.
b. What is the random variable involved in this study? Describe its role in this situation.
- The ideal age is the random variable and its value represents the response of the interviewee. It is totally dependent on the interviewee’s thinking. It indicates the ideal age that the people of a particular age group would like to remain living at forever.
c. Is the random variable discrete or continuous?
- Since the random variable can take an infinite number of values depending on the respondents’ answers, it is continuous.
