Bowling for Columbine is an American documentary film by Michael Moore. The documentary delves into acts of violence, and the environments in which these acts occur. In addition, the documentary explores the opinions and assumptions of the public and powerful individuals such as Matt Stone, Marilyn Manson, and Charlton Heston on the prevalence of gun violence in the United States.

On April 1999, there was a shooting at Columbine High school which involved two senior students by the names of Harris and Klebold. Both students murdered twelve pupils and one teacher, and injured twenty one other students. According to Moore’s documentary, the bullets used in the massacre were purchased from a local Wal-Mart licensed by the state to sell ammunition. Additionally, the guns used by the two boys were legal. This situation brings up the question of how can an object that is capable of destroying people in a blink of an eye be so easily obtained by two young students? And what influences a human being such as the columbine shooters to carry out such an abominable act?

The media and several public figures blamed a Rock-n-Roll group called Marilyn Manson. They claimed that the lyric from Marilyn Manson’s songs was what lead the two boys to commit the massacre. Unfortunately, the public failed to realize that several other factors are likely to be the cause or what prodded the boys to the violent act. For example, President Clinton, who launched several bombing attacks that day could have just as equally be responsible for the attack, as the boys parents, or Marilyn Manson. As a public, we are told what to believe, and criticized for believing otherwise. This has been the foundation of America since its independence from Great Britain.
