Could you survive in our world today without computers? Just think about it about it, no cell phones, no Facebook, no video games, how hard would that be? Since complex computers have been around for over 60 years, none of our generation has had to experience this. The lack of computers would affect almost every area of our life. (Rooney, Anne) Computers have advanced our society immensely.

Personal Computers today are used for almost anything. Things like math, engineering drawings, word processing, and predicting weather are very common ways they are used. It was called a universal device because it could do all these things, but it’s still the same machine. (“Machine that Changed the World”)

The first actual computer was built by Blaise Pascal in 1642, but the only tasks it could accomplish were basic adding and subtracting. It was referred to as a calculator. None of the early computers had no chips, monitors, or programs. The first complex computer was called ENIAC. (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer) This computer needed a large room in order for it to fit in. It was huge! (Vonnegut)

Once computers actually started getting really complex, people started creating programs for them. These are basically written codes that instruct a computer to complete a certain task. But they are written in a special language that looks nothing like ordinary languages. Examples of these languages are Python, and Java Script. (Rooney, Anne)

So many things would be changed if we didn’t have computers. A countless number of cures wouldn’t have been found, and there is no way you could keep up with what medicines to give patients. Also the entertainment would be nowhere near what we have today. Finally, there would be no chance of space exploration and counting all the votes for the Presidential election would be virtually impossible. Could you imagine how different the world would be without computers? (Vonnegut)
