Ip Man Movie Reflection

"Ip man" is a biographical film about martial art based on the life of Ip man who is not only a master of Wing Chun, but also a man with strong national consciousness. The story occurred in sometimes between 1936 to 1945. This was the time when Japan invaded China and of course everyone at that time was having a very difficult time to live. Maybe this period is more able to reveal what Chinese culture is and what Chinese believe in martial art. This film is basically promoting the spirit and the philosophy of marital art even though this film has quite numerous fighting scenes that may capture the audience's attention. The spirit of martial art in Chinese culture is clearly shown by Ip Man in the film. Accordingly, Kung Fu is not made to bully the weak or poor people, is made to protect oneself, ones family and ones homeland and it is more likely a practice to exercise ones body or psychology. In fact, there are few traits such as the Chinese custom, Chinese belief and the art that are unique and very different from the western culture in "Ip man".

First of all, the Chinese custom has lots of characteristics and prosperity in Fo Shan in 1930-1940's. At the beginning of the film, many people celebrate in Chinese new year and the market, restaurant and factory possess lots of workers and customers, which means Fo Shan has a very great economy because people can spend money to shop and the business runs very well. This is so Chinese style because China used to have lots of people to contribute their economy, most of the people do not have money problem to buy food and clothes to live. More importantly, Fo Shan is a place described as "City of martial art". Martial art becomes a very usual custom or hobby for the Chinese men or women. In the movie, we can see lots of people practicing wushu everyday of their lives and there are numerous martial classes provided by those who are the masters in different kinds of wushu.
