Globalisation

India developed a new middle class, benefitting from the rise in science and technology

Bruce- due to a rise in technology we are becoming more secular

But in India a cast majority of the middle class are religious; in fact there is evidence to suggest that religion is on the increase

-2007 state of the Nation survey conducted discovered the religiousity has risen by a substantial amount in the last 5 years. 5% said last religious but 30% said more religious in the last 5 years.

Like Wilson (who looked at church attendance), the Indian national council carried out research- discovered religious holiday trips accounted for more than 50% of package holidays booked (pilgrimages)

Further research shows that educated people and MC people are becoming more religious

In India- ultra nationalism e.g. Hindu’s – proud to be Indian. This is similar to Bellah’s civil religion.

More religious because they are grateful, proud of what India has become. Thanking their Gods for their new found wealth.

Capitalism in India has lead to an increase in religiousity. ‘Rather than retiring from religion, our secularisation theory would expect the middle class in India are turning back to religion and religion is thriving’.

Religious Market- No choice in India because there is not much immigration or diversity.

East Asia/China

Confucianism- Chinese belief system (hard work, frugality, self discipline, commitment to education)

This is similar to Weber ‘protestant work ethic’

East Asia= Capitalist, huge success

This suggests that if they weren’t religious then they wouldn’t work so hard

Latin America

Berger- links Pentecostalism to Weber ‘Calvinism’, They lead a frugal (pure) life and reinvest all their capitals back into business. He argues that Pentecostalism has a clear link to capitalism and has contributed to the rise of capitalism in Latin America
