Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory
Definition/Role of Learning
Piaget’s Cognitive Development is based on the assumption that people try to make sense of the world and actively create their knowledge through direct experience with objects, people and ideas; thinking processes and knowledge develop through adaptation and the organization of thought.
Increase in Learning
Piaget believed children to be aggressive learners. Constantly seeking knowledge and readily absorbing it. At the time of birth children are actively compiling all the stimuli they encounter, carefully organizing it and placing each piece in its palpable place like a puzzle. Every trial and error is a learning experience and children seem to grow more from these experiences.
Goal of Learning
The goal of learning is to grow as a person. Children acquire knowledge, as do everyone else, to move to another level in their life span. One can’t grow without knowledge. Knowledge is quintessential to being mobile.
Five Main Points
1. Children are active and motivated learners.
2. Children organize what they learn from their experiences.
3. Interaction with the physical environment is critical for learning and cognitive development.
4. Interaction with other people is equally critical for learning and development.
5. Children adapt to their environment through the process of assimilation and accommodation.
