I.Executive summary
My study examined data provided various federal agencies pertaining to crime rates in all fifty
U.S. states and eight possibly related factors such as per capita income, high school dropout rate,
public aid status, population density, number of kids, average precipitation, unemployment rate and
urban setting. My analysis revealed that of the eight possible factors, only three variables, urbanization
rate, high school dropout rate and population density affected property crime rates. My data
demonstrated my analysis model accounted for 66% of the factors contributing to property crimes.
The model is considered moderately strong in demonstrating a correlation between high school dropout
rate, population density and urbanization.
II. Introduction
Property crimes include burglary, car and motorcycle theft, larceny theft and arson. Property
crimes involve taking money and property without force or threat of force against the victims.
The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate available data to determine if there is a correlation between
the various variables and property crime. The questions that this study will attempt to answer:
1. Are crimes correlated with urbanization?
2. Is unemployment correlated to property crime?
3. Is educational level correlated to property crime?
4. Does public aid correlate to property crime?
5. Is per capita income correlated to property crime?
6. Are the number of kids in families correlated to property crime?
7. Is population density correlated with property crime?
8. Is the amount of annual precipitation related to property crimes?
The data was collected from a variety of U.S. government sources, including : the 1988 Uniform Crime
Reports, Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of Research and Statistics, the Social Security
Administration, the Commerce Department, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the National Center for
