My defining moment in BMT

BMT has been an extremely eventful experience for me. Despite the frequent punishments that we receive, I have learnt to appreciate the moments in BMT which uplift and motivate me to do the best I can. In the context of this essay, the term “moment” refers to a particular experience which I believe played an extremely crucial role in influencing the way I felt about BMT. I believe my defining moment in BMT would have to be the experience of digging and sleeping in a shellscrape during the third night of Field Camp.

The afternoon was spent digging and ensuring that my shellscrape met the standard set by the Subject Matter Experts who had briefed us on the dimensions of a shellscrape. Furthermore, the ground upon which I was digging was rather hard to dig into, as the soil consisted much of clay-like sediments. Despite feeling extremely fatigued due to the heat of the day, I pressed on and ensured that my shellscrape was finished before the day ended, as I was not keen at all on digging my shellscrape at night. Halfway through digging my shellscrape, a centipede about 20 centimeters long emerged from the ground, giving me quite a fright, as I had heard that they were rather poisonous. Fortunately, my Platoon Commander was nearby and aided me in digging it out and killing it.

During that night, I was mostly on my own as my shellscrape was situated rather far away from the other shellscrapes of my section members. Despite the distance between the shellscrapes, my buddy and I maintained communication between each other especially when it came to things such as filling up our water bottles and water bags, going to the latrine, and waking each other up for our respective one third alert duties. Although the terrain was extremely unfamiliar, I managed to orientate myself to the surroundings and learnt to quickly move around with the aid of my buddy and flashlight.
