Company Introduction
“Sprint Nextel is a communications company that offers a comprehensive range of wireless and wire line communication services to consumers, businesses and government users” (Commission, 2010). Sprint affords an ample assortment of communications services to consumer, corporations and government customers. They operate predominantly in the US. with their H.Q. in Overland Park, Kansas and boasts of 40,000 employees. They are the third-largest carrier in the U.S., supplying 48 million clients directly and 8.4 million via resellers. Approximately 11.6% of sales are a result of their long-distance division. “The firm spun off its fixed-line local phone business in 2006, acquired Virgin Mobile in 2009, and owns roughly 52% stake in Clearwire. Kansas-based Sprint Nextel emerged in August 2005 from the merger of Sprint Corporation and Nextel Communications in a $35.0 billion cash and stock deal. As of 2012, Sprint Nextel provides wireless coverage to over 262.0 million people, which incorporates services in all US states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands using code division multiple access (CDMA) and evolution data optimized (EV-DO) network technology. Sprint has managed this system and Nextel's single-transmission assimilated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) in tandem ever since the amalgamation.
