Abstract: Characteristics and Components of a PMIS
This paper describes the characteristic advantages of implementing a generic project management information system. To achieve these advantages, a typical system has components for planning & scheduling; resource management; budgeting, cost control & performance analysis and reporting, graphics & communication. Establishing a PMIS is a crucial step towards achieving competitive advantage for project-centric organizations.
Characteristics and Components of a PMIS
Information system tools and techniques that are assembled to manage information for project management comprise what is known as a Project Management Information System (PMIS). Though manual tools could be involved, the term PMIS usually refers to computer-based systems within a framework and methodology for collecting, storing, processing, and disseminating information (Nicholas 2004).
Among the characteristics of PMIS are speed, capacity, efficiency, economy, accuracy, and ability to handle complexity. Speed and accuracy are the most important characteristics of a PMIS and make computer-based systems far superior to any manual methods. Plans, schedules and budgets can be created and modified in minutes as opposed to days or weeks without a computerized PMIS. The accuracy of information in a project often determines the degree of success or total failure of the project.
Another characteristic of a PMIS is the enabling of a level of detail that permits easy translation to the current project (scribed.com). Project goals and milestones can be graphics, pictures and illustrations to convey information more effectively than just written or spoken...
