Evaluative Disagreements

I read an article Effective Strategies for Increasing Diversity in Nursing Programs (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2012). This article discusses as the U.S. struggles to find solutions to the current nursing schools need to strengthen their efforts to attract more men and minority students. I think discussing key issues in nursing education that relate to human nature, culture, faculty workload, and student demographics is important.

Studies point to many reasons why men and minority group members do not pursue nursing such as role stereotypes, economic barriers, few mentors, gender biases, lack of direction from early authority figures, misunderstanding about the practice of nursing, and increased opportunities in other fields. Compounding the lack of student diversity, and further impacting minority recruitment efforts, is the fact that nursing school deans and faculty also comprise a gender-skewed, racially homogenous group.

Naturally, a lack of diversity in the educational pipeline leads to a lack of diversity in the registered nurse (RN) workforce. This article discus by using a combination of traditional marketing methods, targeted outreach campaigns, and strategic planning, schools can rise to meet the challenge of expanding student diversity and maintaining the integrity of the nursing profession attracting men and a minority group member into nursing is essential.

The article discusses how schools of nursing must take the lead in launching new and aggressive recruitment campaigns aimed at diversifying the nursing workforce. I believe keeping professional standards of nursing career and expansion of diversity within the nursing student increases the effectiveness of professional preparation.
