Nonverbal and unwritten Communication

It is my intent to demonstrate how we use nonverbal and unwritten communication in our everyday life. Nonverbal communication is everywhere and is in everything we do throughout our day, from the time we wake up in the morning until we go to sleep at night. I will be using three past employments as an example.

When I worked in a school cafeteria, there wasn’t a day that the alarm would go off that I would look at the clock and want to hit the snooze button. I finally would get out of bed, only to find that the hot water heater had gone out. This made for a bad start to the day.

After having a bad morning at home, I arrived at school to see the happy faces of the children, which made for a positive change, I felt great. I forgot about how bad my morning had been. One day as I turned to go inside I saw a child crying, I was concerned and went over to see what was wrong and see if I could do to help. This changed my mood for the better.

When I worked at a law firm, our receptionist resigned. This put a frown on my face, as I was being told that I would have to cover the front reception area and assume all the duties it entailed until someone was hired for the position.

I was the first person that the customer would have contact with when they came into the office, or hear when I would answer and the phone. I had to have a smile on my face at all times, even when I answered the phone this helped to make sure I was perceived as being pleasant and glad to receive their call and willing to help them when they came in the door. I needed to make sure that I was dressed professionally as I was the first person they had contact with. I needed to be aware of how I was sitting, standing, and how I conversed with others in the office.

I was asked by human resource to screen applicants for the job. She wanted my first impression of the applicant before she would set up an interview. I was to make sure that the application was...
