HUM/105 World Mythology

Myth is used popularly as an urban legend, urban myth, urban tale, or even contemporary legend. It’s a form of modern folklore consisting of stories usually believed by the person telling the story. People often start out talking about a story and say “well they say it’s a myth but”. Myth is derived from the Greek word mythos, which can mean "tale," or story.

In the textbook it talks about myth and how they are ancient narratives and trying to figure out who we are? Trying to figure out our meaning of life and the fundamentals and how we all relate. I honestly feel that myths have several different meanings and there is not one correct answer for it all. You ask one person what a myth is and then ask the next you will get a different answer each times. Myths change over the years just like the stories do. We try to keep the truth behind it, but it often changes. Myths are told over and over, we can only hope it keeps the true meaning of the story being told.

Myths from different cultures have impacts on mythology. Myths of different cultures seem to inhibit a similar trait of belief and the universal human need to understand and comprehend why we exist, or what our purpose is and why we do the things we do and behave in the manner that we behave. It is human nature to want to believe in phenomenal power, the compelling impact of a significant figure that exudes extraordinary and supernatural powers articulates a common belief that all humans draw themselves to the idea of a higher power (Leonard & McClure, 2004). Around the world often we address similar themes, like the beginning of the world and the meaning of life because these are the things that matter to people regardless of their background.
