1. Ceremonies versus Rituals

A ritual refers to group of actions performed for their symbolic value. On the other hand, a ceremony is performed on a special occasion. This is the major difference between the two words.

A ritual may be performed by a single individual or a group of individuals. On the other hand, a ceremony is performed with the involvement of several people on a special occasion. The purpose of rituals differs according to the society and the religious beliefs.

2. Observed versus Participatory Theatre

observed- audience participates vicariously or empathetically with what is happening on stage.

Participatory theatre is a form of theatre in which the audience interacts with the performers or the presenters. Classroom and lecture exercises often include participatory elements, though are not usually considered theatre.

3. Descriptive criticism versus Prescriptive criticism

descriptive criticism is an attempt to describe as clearly and accurately as possible what is happening in a performance..while the prescriptive criticism is that the critic not only describes what has been done but offers advice and sometimes even insists on what should be done

4. Social Roles versus Personal Roles

Social role-General roles recognized by society, such as father, mother, child, police officer, store clerk, teacher, student, business executive, and so on

Personal Role-Roles that we assume with our family and friends, such as being a braggart, a martyr, a conspirator, and so on,
