DIABETES - General Information
* The most common name for diabetes is "Diabetes Mellitus"
* In diabetes, body is incapable of getting energy from the food
* It is a chronic disease - it remains once it develops in the body
* Diabetes gradually damages the body, but in today's world people with diabetes are living an active life. This shows how Canada has evolved over the years
* Glucose is a simple kind of sugar that provides our body with energy. After the food intake, the blood carries glucose from digested food to all the cells in the body
* Insulin, type of hormone, is needed to carry glucose out of the blood and into the cells
* People with diabetes have a problem producing correct amount of insulin or they cannot properly use the insulin produced
* People with Type 1 diabetes are not able to produce insulin in their pancreas
* These people have to inject themselves with insulin everyday according to the type of food their eating
* People with Type 2 diabetes (most common) are not able to make enough amount of insulin needed for the body or the body is not able to use it properly
* People with diabetes are responsible for controlling the level of glucose/sugar in their blood
* People with Type 1 diabetes have more of a complicated responsibility
* They need to balance the insulin they inject based on the kind and quantity of food they eat
* When they eat, their blood glucose levels go up and when they exercise or inject insulin, their blood glucose levels go down
* In such situation, insulin is accountable...
