Corona Extra an imported Mexican beer with a universal appeal, in recent years has positioned itself as a formidable competitor against domestic beers. Corona Extra’s branding has positioned it as a beer that delivers fun, sun and a sunny beach mind frame. Most people are unaware of who actually brews Corona Extra beer. The impression is that Corona is the name of the company itself. Contrary to the fact, Corona Extra is actually a brand of beer produced by Grupo Modelo or Modelo Group.

Grupo Modelo started in the mid-1800s as Cervecería Modelo. In 1925, they became one of the top suppliers in Mexico. The company really took off when Pablo Díez Fernández took it over. He created the Corona beer and he created the idea of marketing it worldwide. But, there was a Jamaican brewery that was using it and had been using it for some time. Because that Jamaican company hadn't copyrighted it prior to the official want of copy writing it from the Modelo Group, the court allowed them to have it after a 50 year fight (Crown Imports LLC.com).

Corona Extra was introduced in the United States in 1981, and became the fastest growing imported beer in U.S. history. Corona Extra has been brewed and bottled in Mexico by Grupo Modelo since 1926. Grupo Modelo is Mexico's largest brewer, operating seven state-of-the-art breweries throughout Mexico and currently exporting Corona to more than 150 countries worldwide.

Today, the look, the taste, and the general appeal of Corona are a National American Staple. The commercials and marketing of the beer continues to stay head and shoulders above the competition, enticing the U.S. public with the fantasy and tranquility of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Corona, the flag ship of the Modelo Group has become one of the largest beer companies in Mexico with seven breweries located throughout the Mexican countryside, bottles and brews more than 12 brands of beer and imports another six to seven.
