The Gates Foundation was created in 2000 by philanthropists, Bill and Melinda Gates. The Foundation works towards three main agendas which are improving global health, diminishing poverty through the development of agriculture, and improving education here in America. To date, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the system by which the organization operates is working well to achieve the goals it was established to reach. The Gates Foundation appears to be setting the organizational standard, not only for public sector to follow but for the private sector as well. The organization has a well defined mission statement, a collective vision, and defined processes in place which makes what they do, possible.

Bill and Melinda decided to establish the Gates Foundation after reading an article about millions of children in poor countries who were dying from diseases which children are easily treated or vaccinated for here in America. “We believe in the principle that every human life has equal worth. The life of an impoverished child in a developing county is as precious as the life of a middle-class kid in a developed one. A family struggling to make ends meet in an American inner city matters as much as a family thriving in a safe, suburban neighborhood. Today, billions of people never even have the chance to live a healthy, productive life. We want to help all people get that opportunity.” (Bill and Melinda Gates, 2009) This is a belief that is clearly evident in the work that has been done so far.

First, the largest focus of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has to do with Global Health Programs. This program alone accounts for approximately 50 percent of the foundations total spending.
