Starting on February 1, 2013 the government has decided on a moratorium on the setting up of private universities and colleges of higher learning. What is your opinion?

The government has proposed to impose a moratorium on the setting up of new private learning institutions in Malaysia from February 1, 2013 onwards. I agree because there is currently sufficient supply in the country. The reasons why the government has decided on a moratorium on the setting up of private universities are because to enhance the quality of education and to increase the competitiveness of local graduates.

First of all, the government will focus on enhancing the quality of education in line with global standards. For example, when there are a lot of private universities and colleges of higher learning, the students registered are on a too small scale. Hence, I agree on the government’s moratorium. Which I deem timely, as this will help to address the issues of oversupply as the government tackles the quality of our local education system to transform the nation into an international education hub. In short, a moratorium on the setting up of private institutions will help the transformation of our country to achieve the level of global education.

Furthermore, the moratorium on the setting up of private colleges of higher learning may give higher competition to local graduates. Mostly, the students work less hard because they think the competition between them is not competitive enough. Thus, when the moratorium on the setting up of new private universities, the people will compete with the local graduates so that they can study in public universities. Hence, the local graduates have to study hard because of the higher competition.

In conclusion, the government nowadays wants to focus on enhancing the quality of education and to increase the competitiveness of local graduates. In addition, our world has to transform into a regional education hub.
