1. What do you think are some of the factors in the modern workplace that contribute to a theft of time? How can those factors be managed?

The two major factors that contribute to the theft of time in the workplace are cell phones and internet.

* One of the major factor that contribute to the theft of time in the workplace is cell phones. Cell phones have become such a necessity for some people that they carry them virtually every waking hour, including at work. If the company is monitoring calls, an employee is most likely to use their cell phone making personal calls, accessing social networking sites and mostly texting. Using cell phone in the workplace can cause problems because of lost productivity. Employees engaged in personal cell phone conversations or using their cell phones to check social networking sites are wasting their employers' time unless they are on break. The potential for lost productivity is a key reason some employers seek to decrease cell phone use at work. A company can decrease cell phone use by banning phones from all meetings, group training sessions and conferences. Companies can implement and govern cell phone usage policies in the workplace while striking a balance that is fair to the company and its workers.

* Most of us would be hard pressed to deny our use of the Internet at work for non-work related purposes. With sites like YouTube, eBay, Facebook, and personal email tempting us at every turn, it can be difficult to resist personal Internet usage at work. You walk around the office, pass by work stations and notice multiple windows open on any number of computers - not all of them Word, Excel or work-related software.
