What is your analysis of Green's actions and job performance to date?

Thomas Green’s job performance was clearly not meeting his manager’s expectations and he did not take the proper steps to manage his relationship with, Frank Davis, his boss. Thomas’s informal work style did not align with his boss’s style and his client’s expectations. Frank and the company’s clients preferred to receive information through memos and convincing presentations prior to face to face meetings. Thomas incorrectly and strictly relied on his personal power of charisma to win over the clients and his supervisor.

Thomas failed to understand that he needed help and cooperation from his boss to be successful at his job. For example, Thomas was convinced that a new up-selling and cross-selling software program would be necessary to increase sales for the Travel and Hospitality Business. He should have received buy in from his boss to ensure this project would align with the department’s goals prior to launching this project. If Frank Davis supported this project, then Thomas could leverage Frank’s alliances and networks and potentially Shannon McDonald’s positional power to ensure the project’s success.

In addition, Thomas did not manage conflict well with his boss when he openly challenged his boss’s forecast goals in the budget planning meeting. This intended constructive conflict turned into relational conflict due the fact Thomas did not built a good rapport with Frank and a positive reputation prior to making this challenge. Thomas may also have an issue with authority, since he continued to defy his boss by constantly expressing his opposing opinion to his colleagues.

Besides preparing a new resume in case he is fired, Thomas should try to leverage personal power and his relationship with Shannon McDonald to get one more chance to prove that he is the correct person for the senior marketing...
