Most college students attend college with the intent to get a good education and someday have a good job that allows them to use the skills that were learned while attending college. I am sure that when Larry Page and Sergey Brin attended Stanford University in 1996, they had no idea that a good education would not be the only thing that would pay off for the two (Google, 2008). Larry 24 and Sergey 23 were graduates of Stanford when they created Google an inter-net search engine that would change the lives of the American people (Google, 2008). Google sounds like a funny name that was just made up by some silly college students. This would be far from the truth. Google was made up by two brilliant college students and was derived from the word “googol,” a mathematical term for the number represented by the numeral one followed by one hundred zeros (Google, 2008). Over the span of 15 years, Google has become one of the top companies to work for in America, according to Fortune 500 (100 Best Companies to Work For 2007, 2007). Now in their late thirties, Larry and Sergey have to be proud of what the company has become. Fun and excitement has been incorporated into every job description and I am sure a pre-requisite for all new hires. Free meals, swimming spa and free doctors onsite are some of the many amenities that are available for all employees (100 Best Companies to Work For 2007, 2007). In the midst of all the fun, Google has a mission that puts the goal of the company in perspective. “Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” (Google, 2008) and by incorporating planning, organizing, leading and controlling; Google will remain ahead of other competitors.
