In many workplaces, there are upper level management that is accused of being poor managers and supervisors. This is due to many perceptions that take place because of the many employees that they supervise. It is up to the manager/supervisor to understand the limitations that he/she is under when addressing those differences in the workplace population. It is also important that the manager/supervisor be able to communicate, whether orally or in writing, effectively.

As a supervisor in my own right, I have experienced many types of characteristics in individuals that reflect their historical upbringing and education. And an emotional response from an employee can be very different than that which is expected if you are not familiar with many personal differences that are prevalent in the workplace today. Within that group of employees, there may be many types of individuals. Their differences come from their differing cultures, education, economic situation, gender, age and many other attributes that pertain on how they perceive society and people in general and especially their own standing in their workplace. Because of the differences in people, managers must become familiar with the types of individuals he/she has working for him/her. This entails knowing your employees.

If the manager has access to the personnel files of the employees under him/her then it is appropriate for him/her to study each file on them. This will give the manager/supervisor information that is invaluable to the manager/supervisor because it will tell him/her who that person is. Of course, this is only in a general manner.

The next step for the supervisor/manager to take is to talk with each employee and “get to know” them in a more specific manner. Their likes and dislikes, their family ties, and other personal...
