Managing Diversity for Competative Advantage
Deloitte & Touche, a large Accounting firm finds themselves in a staffing quandry after a significant amount of their women work force start leaving the company. Was this a result of women leaving just to start new families or was there another underlyning issue that was driving the women away. To answer these questions, Deloitte & Touche set up a task force in order to get down to the bottom of this issue.
The Problem
We first look at the initial causes of this problem. I think the problem initially occurred because the company did not have a vested interest in the concerns and needs of its employees. Deloitte & Touche seemed to have an attitude of what can my employees do for me instead of what can I do to greater develop my human capital. In addition, it did not seem like there were any accommodations for say a single spouse where childcare needs would be an issue. Companies need to be honed in on employees needs when trying to manage a diverse work force. If this is not done, I believe that’s when a company will start to see a decline in their valued employees. Because of these issues, the company saw a decline in women employees which caused somewhat of a restructuring in order to win back those women employees.
A Successful Fix?
It appears that from the case study, implementing these new changes, such as flexible work arrangements, reduced workloads and flextime, and training workshops that the changes were successful. The retention of Deloitte & Touche’s women has grown and the turn over rate, especially for women has declined.
