In today’s society Domestic Violence is becoming an epidemic among teenagers. Economic conditions often lead teenagers to act out stress in a violent manner. The purpose of this research is to investigate Domestic Violence among teens in Columbia, South Carolina. This survey paper will also evaluate how teens perceive violence, the impact of domestic violence on teens, and alcohol-related violence.
When a teen is abuse, it is very important to establish if the teen truly knows how to define domestic violence. According to Herrman, “research has found that there are dissimilarity in the way of violence are viewed among adolescence is based on gender (2009).” Females believe that violence is the way to control others and males exert violence when forced or threaten. The study was part of the national monitoring system of Adolescent Health and Lifestyle Survey given to teens 12-19. The survey addresses the number teens experiencing violence in a month compare to the last 12 months. The author Herrman states, “A considerable number of the teen population about 7.9% has experience violence from a love one within a one month period (2009).” Violence in teen is often related with the use of alcohol. The authors Mattila, Parkkari, Lintonen, Kennus, Rimpela states, “the percentage of teens reporting violence behaviors were under the influence of a control substance 41% to 62% respectively (2005).” The results of the investigation reveal that violent behaviors in boys happen during relaxation times. The survey was given nationwide and compared to previous data of adolescents not only the selected few reporting an incident. The survey assist researchers in understanding facts given to aid teenagers in recognizing domestic violence and prevent others from becoming a victim.
