A Statement Gone Too Far

Many people know the Dixie Chicks as the three talented musicians from Texas who made beautiful country music. But, who would have thought that aside from making beautiful country music, they also make bold statements against the President of the United State. The all American women group were supposed to symbolize America on their tour to England. Instead, while performing at a concert in London, lead singer, Natilie Maines bashed on President Bush on stage surrounded by millions of fans by stating that she was embarrassed that the president was from Texas. Americans were stunned by the country star’s statement against the war and against the president. Country stars are supposed to be patriotic and symbolize America. Americans were very upset that the Dixie Chicks has tainted the image of the United States during such a vulnerable time by making such an unpatriotic statement in London. Because American was to go to war with Iraq, whole nation was ashamed of the outspoken country stars and the comment they made and went on a rampage protesting and banning their music. The nation was upset because at the time, especially after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 happened, many people were very patriotic and sensitive. Lastly, the comment was taken too seriously by the people of the United States.

The United States of America was going through a fragile time when the Dixie Chicks made the controversial comment against the president and the war. “Americans were in a very emotional state after September 11th and Country music fans are traditionally both conservative and patriotic” (Curtis). Because America was about to go into war with Iraq at the time, the country had to show that they were a strong together nation even after being attacked.
