Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) PROGRAM OVERVIEW 1. Why did Walmart develop the Sustainability Index program? We developed The Index to improve the sustainability of the products our customers love by integrating sustainability into our core business of merchandising. The Sustainability Index helps Walmart and our suppliers to better understand our strengths and gaps and to identify improvement opportunities in product and supply chain sustainability. This helps us keep our promise to our customers of delivering great products that will help them Save Money and Live Better. 2. How does the Sustainability Index support Walmart’s overall sustainability vision? Walmart has three core aspirational sustainability goals: to produce zero waste; to be supplied with 100% renewable energy; and to sell products that sustain people and the environment. The Sustainability Index directly supports the sustainable products goal. 3. How is Walmart integrating the Index results into its core merchandising business processes? Walmart and Sam’s Club buyers and their leadership teams will be reviewing Index scores and discussing them with their suppliers during regular business meetings such as buying meetings, year beginning meetings, line reviews, supplier summits, top-to-top executive meetings, KPI reviews and joint business planning sessions. Beginning in February 2013, every Walmart U.S. and Sam’s buyer, merchant and key global sourcing team will have performance objectives dedicated to sustainability topics in their categories. By 2017, Walmart will buy 70% of the goods sold in U.S. stores only from suppliers that use the Index to evaluate and share the sustainability of their products. 4.
