Abstract

This research paper examines the history, old and new types of fuel and transportation and the impact these have on our environment. It focus on air pollution analyzing the effect that different factors such as consumerism and over population have and what can governments and society do to change this.

By analyzing different types of fuels i.e. natural gas and fuel cells this research looks for opportunities to improve air quality without affecting transportation. Here the reader will also learn about alternative means of transportation and how these could be beneficial not only to the environment but also the way people live in urban places.

Key Words: Energy, Fuel, Transport, Government, Air Pollution

Introduction

Fuel and transport play a very important role in economy and social life since the beginning of human history, at the same time “transport is responsible for about a third of all Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in the USA and one fifth of worldwide GHG emissions, mainly in form of CO2. Many studies suggest that growing reliance on the automobile for urban travel is an important reason for increased energy use and CO2 emissions as well as other problems such as traffic congestion, air pollution.” Therefore governments and society have to start shifting into a more sustainable way of transportation. As stated before the conventional use of fuel in transportation is having a destructive environmental impact on our planet; can alternative methods present an opportunity to reduce air pollution?

As Mc Lennan mentions in his book “The Philosophy of Sustainable Design” designers, governments and scientist should work together and solve these problems taking in consideration the six principals he talks about in the book; “(1) Respect for the Wisdom of Natural Systems, (2) Respect for People, (3) Respect for Place, (4) Respect for the Cycle of Life, (5) Respect for Energy and Natural Resources, and (6) Respect...
