Introduction

This study is about the role of an Operating Manager in Information Systems, and the issues that he needs to address that entails the problems of the old system, and the complexities involved in the conversion of a new computer system. Leon Lassiter will need to find out what happened to the workstation data, and how to let the marketing staff get access to their accounts so they are able to do their jobs.

Background

The organization Midsouth Chamber of Commerce (MSCC) was formed due to powerful business people wanting to lobby the legislature on the issue of transportation access. But it has changed over the years to include issues, such as state banking laws, industrial development, and business taxes. This was done through the new leadership of President Jack Wallingford whom was an aggressive advocate for the business community.

The main problems involved are:

* The old systems are not compatible with the new system

* Workstation data is missing

* Marketing staff cannot access their accounts

* Management of the new conversion is lacking

The Midsouth area was dependent on transportation systems for their economic development in the early 1900s. Since then, it expanded and has grown to deal with a wider range of issues affecting the business community. Because of MSCC’s aggressive growth, it is facing a lack of funds for its annual operating budget. After six months, MSCC had a $330,000 deficit for the 2001fiscal year. Leon Lassiter knew that the whole Information system needed an overhaul, because the existing system had limited capability.
