Deadline Information: The application deadline has not yet been finalized for this year, but is expected

to be the same as last year. The date shown here is tentative based on last

year’s deadline date. Please check back in February for a refreshed application

deadline date. Applications are available online from the American Educational

Leaders website. This is an essay contest. In addition to the completed

application, the student must submit brief biography and an essay on one of the

four topics listed: federal or state budgets, voter competency, closing tax

loopholes, or unemployment. The essay must be between 1,500 and 2,000

words in length, typed, and double-spaced. Each student may submit up to four

essays, one on each topic. Essays and applications must be postmarked by the

deadline date.

Number of Recipients: Three awards offered annually. First through third place winners will receive and

award.

Award Amount: First prize is $3,000, second is $1,250, and third is $1,000. Professors/teachers

of the top two finishers will each receive a $250 honorarium. Awards are offered

annually and are non-renewable.

Requirements: • This award is for U.S. students.

• Must be a U.S. citizen.

• Must be a current undergraduate college or university student.

Additional Information: The essays will be judged – not on the basis of agreement or disagreement with

the views of Americanism Educational Leaders, or on the length of their

bibliographies – but on their internal logic, coherence, originality, thoughtfulness,

and evidence of sound research. A panel of prominent Southern California

business and education leaders will judge the entries. Winners will be announced

in June. All winners will be notified via both email and U.S. mail.
