Service Learning Paper

Service Learning, for me, can be divided into two parts---serving and learning. Serving means to help others and learning means, of course, improve you. So, the whole phrase here means, literally, to improve while helping others. I am very thankful that this whole experience had last summer practice and improves my life skills and opened my eyes in many ways.

Last summer for my service learning project, I went to Zicha Primary School, Jiangmen, Guangdong Province. Zicha Primary School is founded in 1905 and now is the top primary school in the whole jiangmen Area, which is my hometown. My supervisor was Ms. Guoying Zou, who was the headmaster and also a friendly and kind lady. Because I just came back from the United States, she said my oral English and pronunciation were very good, and arranged to help the primary school kids, as an associate English teacher, improve their English ability and to show them my one-year experience in United States.

Why did I choose to go to a primary school to do my RSI project? That is because my parents and my grandparents are all teachers, and even though I am an accounting major student, being a teacher is still one of my options in the future. So, this is really a good chance for me to be a real teacher even it was just several weeks. Through this project, I understood the four life skills much better than before, especially the communication skill and problem-solving skill. It is not quite difficult to imagine how much you have to say and how many problem you have to solve when facing so many kids under 12. Here I think it is necessary to mention that in China, because of the huge population, there are usually around 60 students in one class and the class is fixed. So this is really a complicating job to for a teaching assistant to communicate with kids, to connect the kids with the teachers and also to the students to solve the problems in study.
