Introduction

           Statistical measures of crimes are compiled through several resources. Some of these resources include household surveys, through hospital records, and law enforcement agencies. Once this information is assemble and reported to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). With this, the Uniform Crime Reports comes into play. This program was develop in 1929 by the International Association of Chiefs of Police provide reliable crime statistics for the nation. Each year, several statistical publications are attain and the information, which has been selected by several thousand law enforcement agencies across the United States is design and inputted into the uniform crime report database. This analysis can help determine whether the crime rate is under control or if it is out of control. Being able to compare occurrences of offenses reported and the area in which it was reported will help in determining which states and cities have a higher rate of crime.

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

            Two of the largest cities in Pennsylvania are Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. In 2008 the population in Philadelphia averaged over 1.4 million people and Pittsburgh’s population was over 300 thousand people. With a larger number of people, the rate of crimes committed is greater. According to the Uniform Crime Report, Philadelphia had more crimes reported then Pittsburgh. The types of crimes that are being reported to the Uniform Crime Report include violent crimes such as murder, rape, property crimes, burglary, larceny, robbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, and arson.

Rate of Crimes

            In 2008, the amount of burglaries reported in Philadelphia 5,828 as where Pittsburgh had a reported 1,390. With burglaries at that number for the year, it averages out to about 112 burglaries each day for Philadelphia and about 26 burglaries for Pittsburgh each day. With Philadelphia...
