The Necklace Essay

In the story “The Necklace” there is a girl; Mathilde Loisel; who wishes to be as rich as her friend. She lives miserable comparing her house and furniture with her friend’s. She thinks she doesn’t have the best husband, but she is wrong. The only person that helped her and supported her in the story is her husband. Trying to look rich will teach her a lesson. She is going to find out that being ambitious isn’t good in life.

Besides that, Mathilde Loisel is a middle class woman. She wanted to marry a rich man so that she could become a high class woman. She was very ambitious; money was everything for her. She married a middle class man. She was so unhappy because she didn’t have the money to wear fancy clothes. As Maupassant stated on the story, “She was a simple person, without the money to dress well, but she was as unhappy as if she had really gone down in the world.” (187) Even though she wasn’t rich; she wasn’t that poor. Maupassant wrote, “The sight of the young country girl who did her simple housework awakened in her only a sense of desolation and lost hopes.” (187) She acted like if she had nothing in life, but she had somebody cleaning her house. I don’t consider myself poor, but I don’t have a maid in my house. Mathilde had a rich friend and instead of trying to spend more time with her; she wanted to stop seeing her. Her friend had everything she wanted therefore Mathilde would feel sad, jealous and in misery.

Additionally, Mr. Loisel, Mathilde’s husband wanted to make her feel happy. So that he brought her an invitation for a high class party, but it failed. Instead of making her feel better; she felt worst because she didn’t have anything to fancy to dress. I think Mr. Loisel is a good husband because he wanted to buy her a new dress.
