Braveheart

Within the film Braveheart the inspirational and rebellious leader of the Scottish known as William Wallace and is the main protagonist in the movie. The film takes place in 13th century England as Edward I of England has invaded Scotland and thus has caused the common people to rise up in revolt against the English menace. As William Wallace leads these people to their war of freedom he does so with his personal heroics and inspirational presence alone. Personally it was with Wallace’s achievements and the fantastic scores on the soundtrack that can really make you want to root for this rebellion as it is a story of liberation as much as it is a story of revenge. The story is told well showing conflicts on both sides between the Longshanks and his inadequate son Edward but also shows how the Scottish struggle to gain the support of the greedy nobles that could change the outcome of this war. I enjoyed the love story of Wallace and how he is not some warring monster but a loving man just like anyone else who is pushed beyond control. I also enjoyed watching the epic battles unfold and how accurate more or less these battles were fought in these times. The battle scenes were done on a grand and impressive scale with believable effects such as a Scottish soldier getting shot in the rear but any arrow. I also enjoyed the characters ranging from Wallace’s loving band of warriors to the villain Longshanks and the beautiful princess Isabella. It is interesting that her marriage between Edward was arranged as she was of noble birth yet Wallace’s secret marriage with Murron is one of choice as the women of a village had the freedom to marry who they wished. This is not a movie that is family friendly however, as it is extremely bloody and has some sexual scenes as well. The areas in which they filmed were beautiful and really added to the sense of untamed beauty of Scotland as opposed to the rigid machine that is England trying to impose their will. One of my...
