1. If this was your client, what would you say or do? Be specific. Why would you respond this way?
If I were Suzanne’s counselor, I would first want to establish trust. Since she is coming to me to talk about such a sensitive and crucial matter, I would assume that she does want help. However, I would want her to feel comfortable talking to me. It would be crucial for me to go over informed consent and confidentiality with her in the very beginning. It is important for her to understand that there could be some things that she shares with me that I may be required by law to notify her parents about (as long as I was sure that this would not put this client in danger). I would not tell her this until she understood that my main goal and objective is to help her and guide her through this difficult time. I would want to encourage her and let her know how important it is that she talk to her parents. I would offer to go with her and talk to them alone or with her. Hopefully, she would understand the importance of this and agree to either do it on her own or allow me to assist her with this. It would be crucial for her family to be aware of this situation as hard as it may be. They will inevitably be this client’s love and support through this process. As her counselor, I would help her in every way legally and ethically possible. However, in the end, she will need her family’s support on a daily basis.
I would also need to have the conversation with her about what choices that she is thinking about. I would not do this in the first session because I feel like the first steps that need to take place is her talking with her parents. I do not think that she would be able to talk about any choices until she got the burden of notifying her parents out of the way. After she has talked with her parents and I, we would then begin to talk about her thoughts with this pregnancy and her future plans. I...
