The Leadership Style of Peter Vyas

Peter Vyas, general manager of the filtration unit of Applied Research Technologies (ART) exhibited the situational leadership style while considering his group’s proposal. “The situational leadership Theory tells us that the directing, coaching, supporting and delegating style are all needed at different times” (Kloppenburg, Shriberg and Venkatraman, 2003, pg. 7). Vyas used the directing style when he directed the technology evaluation team he appointed to concentrate on technologies that could help the unit recover. He used the coaching leadership style to reach a compromise between the two teams on the timeline for completing the building the prototype. Peter demonstrates the supporting leadership style by being a strong promoter of his team ideas. He also worked to gain support from leadership and to minimize interference that could negatively impact the accomplishment of team goals. “A major task for a leader is to match the proper talent to the requirements of the job” (Lewis, 2003, pg. 78). Peter Vyas exercised the delegating leadership style when he selected Janice Wagner as the teams lead. Vyas delegated several major tasks to her that would help the team gain a better understanding of how to proceed. He recognized that Wagner’s skill and experience were needed to help the team be successful.
