Maslow’s theory is a need in psychology; he studied this theory in 1943, he would tend to study on people such as Albert Einstein because he was the one of the healthiest of the population, instead of studying people with ill health, mental illnesses or a disability this is because it would be the psychological needs of people with ill health.

The basic needs are Physiology, safety, belongingness and love, esteem and self actualisation, these describe the pattern hat human motivation generally moves through.

The Hierarch pyramid start at the bottom with basic needs which all humans needs which includes breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis and excretion, the need for self actualisation is located at the top.

Deficiency needs, which are the most important layers are the first four, esteem, friendship and love, security and physical needs, if the needs are not met it can lead to that person to be left feeling anxious and tense.

We all need physiological needs to survive, these needs are air, water and food, these are basic survival needs that all animals have as well as humans, and without these the body cannot function and will fail.

Safety needs come after, once an individual is satisfied, losing your job, natural disaster and war cause post traumatic stress. Children have a greater need to feel safe, therefore safety needs affect children a lot more in absence.

The need for love and belonging can overcome the need of physiology and security needs depending on the strength of peer pressure. Love and belonging is the third level of humans needs, children tend to have a stronger need for this, which explains the reason for a child to cling on to its parents in an abusive home. The absence of this need is neglect, which can affect some one’s ability to form relationships with family, friends and intimacy. All humans need to be loved, both sexually or none sexually, without love and belongingness can come loneliness and social anxiety.
