Abstract
In this paper I simply took a closer look at crew resource management. With being a maintenance manager and having some issues with personnel, I wanted to take a closer look to see what information I might find. Within this text you are given a simple and broken down version of Crew Resource Management as outlined by NASA. NASA was the organization that gave birth to CRM while investigating the reason behind aircraft crashes. I took each topic and briefly touched on what they are; hopefully painting an overall picture that gives you enough information to provide a good platform to jump from in your search for more information. There was actually more on this topic than I was aware when I first started writing this paper, so there is more information out there if you seek it. If anything, you should learn what CRM is and what makes up CRM. What I did not go into was the area of applying it. This is something that I have yet to try on a personal level.
Crew Resource Management is a very large topic, but one that was interesting. Our overview for the course went into some detail about specific things, but I could tell that we were only scratching the surface. Out of curiosity I decided to do some additional research to see what else I could find out about it.
Within Crew Resource Management, which was developed by NASA in 1979, there are 15 major areas that they address. According to what I was able to find these are: cultural awareness, team building and the supportive environment, communication, attitudes, managerial and supervisory skills, decision making and short-term strategy, leadership, error and error management, fatigue, workload management, stress management, state of the flight deck, automation, multi-crew operation, and situation awareness.
