Windows 2003 Remote Access

Abstract

Remote access is the most useful tool that has been incorporated with Windows®. It has opened to door for a faster and more efficient way to maintain terminals that connected via a network. The network can be in a small space or span countries and all terminals that have the remote access tool installed can be accessed by authorized personnel. Those personnel can perform necessary and required tasks without leaving the comfort of their office or home.

Let’s begin by defining remote access. Remote access is “the ability to access your computer from a remote location” (Techterms.com 2011). That sounds simple enough nothing complicated about the definition of remote access however, the inner workings of remote access are quite complex.

There are so many things that have to be considered when it comes to remote access. How will you connect to the other computer? Will it be dial-up, local area networks, wide area networks, or virtual private networks over the internet? Once you have established how the connection is going to take place there is the matter of security opening a connection to another computer without security leaves both computer vulnerable to attack by hackers, viruses, malware, and spyware. Security feature that are included in Microsoft Remote Access are “authentication and authorization, secure user authentication, extensible authentication protocol, data encryption network access quarantine control, caller ID, remote access lockout, remote access policy profile packet filtering, and packet filtering for VPN remote access” The security of the connection is of the utmost importance to keep the data transmissions, personal information, secure information, and personal identity information safe from prying eyes.
