1. Human resource management is best described as developing and maintaining employee satisfaction. Also achieving goals for an organization in an efficient and effective manner. In the discussion this week we talked about ‘Google’s compensation package offered to its employees and how it was ranked the number one place to work. They had the lowest turnover rate compared to the other competitive organizations out there (Lawrence, 2013)’. Many organizations may not be able to afford to splurge on their employees so they may have to accommodate in other ways like; throw a holiday party or get out early Friday’s. Just simple gestures alone will go a long way.

The benefit that the company offers is a strategic component because you want to cater to the needs and content of your employees. You want the most devoted workers or you’ll lose them to the next employer offering better benefits and gives them a stepping stone to reach opportunities. By structuring a benefits program that goes beyond basic needs, such as Genentech and Google that offer on-site healthcare, sleeping pod’s, and free meals employees will feel more like assets instead of just workers. This will lead to a more productive workplace and a more profitable bottom line for the organization. HRM must constantly review compensation packages that best fit the company so they can remain strategic and stay ahead.

2. In the text Genentech and Zappos use bonuses and rewards for the longevity of the company. This is explained as “The primary reasons for this recognition are the important work that they do and the strong company culture that values equality and communication (DeCenzo, 309)”. With low turnover rates and highly satisfied employees shows these tools is a huge motivation factor.
