Function and Role of law

The function and role of law in both business and society is needed to help keep the world from pandemonium. Businesses have laws that are followed to help protect the business. Society’s laws help the public from harm and to help with reward if harm is committed.

The definition of law, according to Merriam-Webster Online (2012), is a binding custom or practice of a community and a rule of conduct or action prescribed or formally recognized as binding or enforced by a controlling authority. Some of the controlling authorities would be the federal or state governments. “The role and function of law is to maintain peace, personal freedom and social justice” ("The Functions & Role of Law in Business & Society", 2012).

The United States Constitution is the basis that laws are written at federal and state level. The Constitution is there to give guidelines to government entities on what power the entity has, and to protect the population from the Government wrong doing and other people’s stupidity.

At my place of business, Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems ("UAMPS"), we have an in-house attorney who also works with our outside legal attorneys. We are a government agency that buys and sells electricity and have many contracts that need to be reviewed to protect both UAMPS and the cities that purchase electricity. Many of the contracts are many pages that have to be written and reviewed by our in house attorney as well as out outside attorneys. The contracts need to not only follow the States regulations but also the Federals, UAMPS attorney needs to be efficient in both. UAMPS attorney was hired right out of law school, which gave UAMPS the opportunity to have an attorney that is current with the laws and eager to receive experience.
