Leadership

Through-out our lives, we have all seen at least some form of leadership. If you watch Sunday afternoon football, you have probably seen Tom Brady lead the Patriots to score a touchdown. If you live in the United States, or probably most other first-world countries, you have most likely heard of President Obama. And who in America hasn’t heard of Steve Jobs or Bill Gates? All of these people are considered leaders in some form or fashion, but what makes a great leader?

As we can see from the given scenario, I believe that Executive A can be defined as a level 5 leader. Level 5 leaders are often described as having a workmanlike diligence and unwavering resolve which Executive A clearly has when colleagues describe him as driven and fiercely ambitious. Also, the fact that Executive A tends to shy away from the attention and gives credit to other leaders in the organization is another clear example of level 5 leadership: being modest and humble. Hand-in-hand with that is that Executive A is quick to accept responsibility for mistakes and poor results, which is yet another quality of a level 5 leader. Finally, level 5 leaders are confident enough to set up successors and Executive A takes pride in developing strong leaders. Level 5 leaders are well known for taking a failing company and bringing it back up stronger than ever, and that is exactly what executive A has done with this corporation.

Another type of leader is the transactional leader. Transactional leadership is more of a management based style of leadership that focuses more on group performance and organization. Employees under a transactional leader are likely to either receive rewards or punishments to promote compliance. From these examples, we can clearly see that Leader B is a transactional leader.
